Arc Chair
A cantilever chair for my Studio II course, led by Prof. Dr. Şebnem Timur, built from laminated and steam-bent wood so one continuous curve carries the seat. I took it from technical drawings to joinery, a deformation analysis and a life-cycle assessment.
What I focused on
- 01
Sustainability
Designed around people, planet and profit. A life-cycle assessment followed the chair from raw material to reuse, recycling and disposal, to see where its impact could drop.
- 02
Manufacturing
Wood laminating and steam bending instead of sawn curves: the grain runs with the curve, so it is stronger and springs back less. Laminating by hand on a mould needs no extra energy.
- 03
Structure & joinery
Laminated layers balance tension and compression to keep the cantilever stable; a deformation analysis checked it under load. Six screws and six dowels join the parts, four pads stop it slipping.
From the final jury: the form study, technical and exploded drawings, a deformation analysis and the user scenario.
